The community bitcoin wallet — after the custodial Lightning sunset

BlueWallet is one of bitcoin's best-known free wallets, "forged in the ashes of the 2017 fork wars" by its own telling: self-custody, multisig vaults, hardware-wallet integration (Coldcard, Passport, Jade, Keystone), watch-only wallets, coin control and Payjoin, on iOS, Android and desktop. Checked 2026-08-21.

The history every new user should know is documented on its own blog: the hosted Lightning service, Lndhub.io, was sunset in 2023 — announced that February, shut down on 31 May — and since then Lightning in BlueWallet only works by connecting a node you run. The Lightning marketing pages still read enthusiastically enough that a casual reader could miss this; the custodial convenience is gone, by design and for good.

Corporately, this is the least documented project in its class: the privacy policy names "Bluewallet Services" as the company, with no jurisdiction or registration anywhere, no terms page (404), and a warrant-canary-style statement ("never received any inquiries from NSA, FBI, FSB…") last refreshed in May 2021 — a canary that stopped singing five years ago tells you little either way.

What remains is genuinely good free software with real features and zero fees beyond the network's. Treat it as what it is: community code you trust on its openness, not a company you can hold to anything.
