The self-custodial Lightning wallet with a $100 liability cap
Muun is a self-custodial bitcoin and Lightning wallet praised for one thing above all: simplicity. One balance covers on-chain and Lightning, payments are instant, and recovery rests on an exportable Emergency Kit rather than a seed phrase — the design uses 2-of-2 multisig, with both keys in your Kit and only one on your phone. Checked 2026-08-21.
The corporate side is nearly invisible: Muun Wallet Inc., a Cayman Islands company named only inside a static terms file, with no about page, no team, no founding year and no user figures anywhere on the site. For a wallet this widely used, that is the thinnest corporate disclosure in its class — worth knowing, even if self-custody means the company never touches your coins.
There is no service fee published; the wallet's pitch is its mempool-based fee estimator, which its blog benchmarks as 12-30% cheaper on average than standard bitcoind estimation. Whether Muun adds any margin of its own is not published. Lightning fees run "as low as 1 satoshi".
The terms deserve their read: everything from network congestion to phishing to your own mistakes is expressly outside Muun's responsibility, and total liability is capped at one hundred US dollars. Reasonable for free software — and a number to keep in mind when deciding how much of your stack lives on a phone.
