Passport reinvented: the bitcoin wallet that became "Human Authority Hardware"

Foundation Devices of Boston made its name with the Passport, one of the most praised bitcoin hardware wallets of its generation. Checked 2026-08-21, the catalogue tells a pivot story: only the Passport Prime is for sale — €367.95 to European visitors, "Assembled in the USA" — marketed as "the world's first Human Authority Hardware" where bitcoin shares the device with 2FA codes, security keys and encrypted files.

The older Passport models are simply gone from the store: the classic Passport and Passport Core pages now render Prime content. Owners and reviewers of the earlier devices should know the product line has moved on — anyone buying "a Passport" today is buying a different, broader, considerably more expensive device.

The company publishes its founders (Zach Herbert, Ken Carpenter, Jacob Johnston), a $6.4M raise backed by Polychain and Fulgur, and an independent Keylabs security audit calling the architecture one that "exceeds industry standards". What it does not publish: a company registration number, a founding year, or sales figures — and its Boston imprint address is a mailbox-style suite.

No licence is claimed and none applies: this is self-custody hardware, with the keys and the responsibility on your side of the table. The open question for buyers is simpler — whether the AI-era repositioning serves the bitcoin-first user the original Passport was built for.
