Bitcoin-native payments — licensed in Malta, unprotected in the UK

Strike is a bitcoin-only money app: buy and sell with tiered fees, hold in custody the company says is backed one-to-one ("We don't lend out your bitcoin"), withdraw on-chain for free, and pay over Lightning. Its "Send Globally" product moves money across borders using bitcoin as the rail. Checked 2026-08-21.

For UK and European users, the counterparty is Zap (Strike) Europe Limited, a Maltese company (C114533) licensed by the Malta Financial Services Authority as a Crypto-Asset Service Provider under MiCA — for order execution, exchange, transfers and custody. The same footer that boasts "one of the most licensed Bitcoin-native companies globally" also states, plainly: "Strike is not authorised by the UK Financial Conduct Authority" — so no FSCS cover and no Financial Ombudsman recourse for UK customers. Both statements are true; only one is in the marketing.

Fees are published, in dollars: recurring DCA purchases are free after the first week, other trades run from 0.89% under $5,000 of monthly volume down to 0.25% above $15M, with a targeted all-in spread of 0.22%. Oddly, the fee FAQ speaks only USD while the European terms define your fiat as EUR or GBP — no sterling fee table exists.

The terms are worth a read before scaling up: transactions are irreversible, accounts can be frozen during investigations, and funds sitting idle for two years can be locked. The one-to-one custody claim is the company's own; no third-party attestation is cited on the pages we checked.
