The Isle of Man bitcoin veteran whose pounds are someone else's e-money

CoinCorner has sold bitcoin "since 2014" from the Isle of Man: buys and sells at a flat 1%, recurring purchases, merchant payments, the Lightning contactless Bolt Card, and Send Globally remittances from the UK to the Philippines, Nigeria or Kenya. It claims 350,000+ users across 15 markets. Checked 2026-08-21.

Its legal structure is candid once you find it: CoinCorner Ltd is registered with the Isle of Man FSA under the Designated Business Act — a registration, not a banking licence — and the GBP and EUR balances in every account are legally electronic money issued by Mercury Foreign Exchange Limited, an English company authorised by the FCA (FRN 900858). The same footer completes the picture: CoinCorner and cryptoasset investments "are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, are not covered by the Financial Ombudsman Service, and are not subject to protection under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme".

Fees live in a help-centre article rather than a site page: 1% per trade (min £1), free bank deposits, 2.5% card deposits, tiered on-chain withdrawal fees by speed — free if you can wait a month — and free Lightning withdrawals up to £1,000. E-money balances are safeguarded in segregated accounts, though not FSCS-covered.

One small oddity for the record: the homepage stat block says "14+ Years" while the same page says founded in 2014 — twelve years as of this check. A rounding of enthusiasm rather than substance, but numbers are numbers.
